Celtic wedding traditions are simple and meaningful. Their weddings often took place in open contact with nature: it was there that he gave his blessing to the union. The ceremony is performed by a simple ritual called handfasting. The couple were facing each other and, holding hands tied, wrapped together, by the ceremonial rope, which is their bond of unity. This is where the term marry comes in. Handfasting symbolizes the unity of spouses. There are many variations on how handfasting was carried out and this seems to change over time and by location. Some used one cable or ceremonial rope, while others used up to six. In a Scottish wedding it was used a piece of tartan to tie the couple's family together. In some rituals, the couple shook hands and stepped over a branch or a broom, as it signifies the beginning of their new life together.
